Description

Ian Clarke (b.1948) is one of Australia’s foremost violin makers.  Originally from Queensland, Ian commenced study at the Newark School of Violin Making, where his teachers were Maurice Bouette, Glen Collins, and Wilfred Saunders.  The class was a formidable peer environment, containing such eminent members of the craft including Roger Hargrave, John Dilworth, Matthew Coltman, Michael Byrd, and Paul Bowers.  While still a student, Ian entered a violin in the inaugural Triennale violin making competition in Cremona, which won a silver medal.  Although somewhat unfairly overlooked as a living maker in Queensland, Ian’s instruments have been played in the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and other major groups around the world, and also won and placed in various performing competitions locally and overseas.  This instrument was consigned to us by the original owner whose parents commissioned it for her in the 1980s.  In excellent original condition, this violin was recently fitted with a new bridge and soundpost but will be sold with the original ones.  It has been set up by Yuri Djachenko and David Patterson (who trained in the craft of violinmaking with Ian Clarke) with Thomastik Infeld Red strings.
